Student Spotlight

Jessica T. is one of our outstanding karma ‘peeps.’ She is currently participating in Breathe’s 200 hour Yoga Teacher Training program and is quite simply a bright light in our community. Here’s more about the amazing Jessica…

How long of you been practicing yoga?

I was first introduced to yoga through a small book I picked up from a garage sale about 15 years ago. I remember just trying to mimic the positions in book. A few years after that I decided to take yoga for extra credits at the community college. This is when I really fell in love with yoga, so much that I ended up taking the second semester. After that semester was over, I had a hard time getting myself to a studio so I resorted to DVDs and internet videos.

How long have you been practicing yoga at Breathe?

About two years ago I started therapy dog training with my pup and I would drive by the studio weekly. I remember being drawn to the studio but seemed to always have an excuse not to go. I had fallen out of my practice and knew I could tell a difference in my life. A year later, while talking about it with a friend she mentioned wanting to go to a class. So the following week we decided to take a class, we signed up for the 30 day new student membership and I figured I’d get a few uses out of it. That month I not only fell in love with my practice again, but I fell in love with Breathe.

How long have you been a peep at Breathe?

It’s been almost a year. After my new student membership was up, I heard about the Karma Crew program and realized what an amazing opportunity the position provided. Breathe already felt like I home so I had no qualms helping with up-keep and I hope to help others feel like they belong as well.

How did you find out about the karma crew?

I actually found out about it through one of my friends that started practicing with me, she was friends with someone who was a peep (Charlotte).

What lead you to join the teacher training this year?

It was a combination of things. I was eager to deepen my practice and learn a little more about the history of yoga as well as a better understanding of alignment principles. After talking about the positive impact practicing regularly had on my life after just a few months, my mom asked me to teach her the fundamentals of yoga. Once I started to, I realized how much more information I needed to know in order for her to get the maximum benefit. I didn’t think that I’d participate in teacher training so soon, but they say there’s no time like the present.

What’s your favorite class at Breathe?

My favorite class is Saturday morning Power Flow. As a waitress, I usually work late on Fridays and it’s the perfect motivation to get out of bed and get my day going. The class is always challenging but manages to keep a light-hearted, playful vibe. I believe it’s important weave fun into your life wherever you can and not to take yourself too seriously.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

This question is always so hard for me to answer, but I know for certain that in 5 years I will be practicing yoga. Hopefully I will be in a position where I can share what I’m learning with others and help them find their love for yoga too.
